Wholesale Truck Insurance Company Studies Effects of Icy Weather Conditions

California-based wholesale truck insurance agency analyzes highly dangerous scenarios drivers must face during this year’s unpredictable weather events.

InsuranceTruck.com, a California-based “wholesale” truck insurance agency offering premium coverage for independent commercial agents/agencies and truck fleet owners, has been studying the effects on drivers who are struggling to transport cargo during this winter’s nationwide icy conditions. As winter 2018’s unpredictable wrath appears to be wreaking havoc on most of America’s roadways – dumping almost unheard-of amounts of ice, sleet, snow and icy rain in parts of the country that in the past never experienced such volumes – Insurance Truck representatives continue to stress why this is the most dangerous time of year for truck drivers.

“Not every driver will be facing driving conditions as seen on Ice Road Truckers, but even in areas where snow is a rare sight, preparation for unforeseen weather and driving conditions is key to survival,” states an Insurance Truck company spokesperson. “Experienced truck drivers always make the effort to prepare for winter weather driving by being ready to take action when the snow and ice hit hard; in determining that drivers are struggling to transport cargo in this winter’s icy conditions, we have collated driving safety tips to increase drivers’ chances of staying safe when severe weather creates poor road conditions.”

These tips include keeping an extra coat, gloves and hat in the truck, along with a few additional layers of clothing so warmth and comfort can be achieved quickly and on-the-fly; keeping an emergency kit consisting of extra water, a knife, dried fruit, high energy bars, first aid kit, jumper cables and flashlight; double-checking windshield wiper fluid and scrapers prior to hitting the road; keeping sand or salt in the truck to get the vehicle “unstuck” from an icy road; topping off the gas tank over half-full, which adds weight for better balance; and keeping extra batteries on hand for flashlights, radios, smartphones and other devices.

Insurance Truck representatives have stated that such horrific weather conditions, of course, make truck driving more challenging, and that drivers who prepare in advance with the aforementioned extra supplies, warm clothing, additional fuel and proper technology will be “a step ahead of the game.”

A border fence from ancient times: Hadrian's Wall in England

Aug 21, 2018

BRAMPTON, England — "Looks like we brought the weather with us from California," the elderly tourist says, pulling on a hat and strolling past me. He disappears up a grass slope, beneath a brilliant, blue sky, his wife beside him. It's the first of several American accents I hear that morning. Perhaps they've come to see what a real border fence looks like. Because that's precisely what's drawn them, and me, to this remote and spectacular part of northern England: an imposing, defensive barrier meant to keep the bad guys out and the good guys safe. At least, that's how...

Reality bites on a trip to find Lincoln's humble log cabin

Aug 21, 2018

HODGENVILLE, Ky. — Years ago, I'd heard that people making the pilgrimage to the tiny log cabin on the farm where Abraham Lincoln was born sometimes burst into tears when they glimpsed it. That alone made it seem worth a trip to Sinking Spring Farm in the remote town of Hodgenville, Kentucky. And so my wife, Lucy, and I set out for a visit. As it turned out, the reality was a little different from what we expected. Historians have said Lincoln's hardscrabble early years contributed much to his character. "I was born, and have ever remained, in the most...

AP Interview: Photographer documented 1968 Soviet invasion

Aug 21, 2018

PRAGUE — It's been 50 years, but powerful images of the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia taken by photographer Josef Koudelka still resonate among Czechs and elsewhere in the world — they've even been admired in Russia. As the armies of the five Warsaw Pact countries invaded his country an hour before midnight on Aug. 20, 1968, Koudelka was ready. Risking his life, he took thousands of photos in the week that followed, capturing the shocking experience for his nation — and the defiance of its people. After the negatives were smuggled out of the country, the photos that were published...

Russia says drone attacks on its Syria base have increased

Aug 21, 2018

HEMEIMEEM AIR BASE, Syria — Russian air defense assets in Syria have downed 45 drones targeting their main base in the country, its military said Thursday, after an attack by the Islamic State group on a Syrian army base a day earlier killed seven troops. The Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov, said that five of them were shot down in the last three days near the Hemeimeem air base. The base in the province of Latakia serves as the main hub for Russian operations in Syria. Konashenkov said that while the drones appear primitive, they use sophisticated...
